Research
The rapid development of aerospace materials in the past few decades has led to drastic efficiency increases and there is a large drive to continue this rate of improvement. However, the increased demand has led to many existing materials reaching the limits of their capabilities, and novel alloy exploration is therefore necessary to provide replacements which enable further improvements.
My research aims to identify alternative alloy systems with high temperature potential, with a particular focus on intermetallic precipitate reinforcement. In order to design alloys with superior properties, an understanding of the underlying phase equilibria is essential. This allows optimisation of a useful material processing route so that the desired microstructure can be obtained, therefore leading to an optimum combination of phase stability and mechanical properties.
