Research
The aim of this PhD is to determine the deformation mechanisms operating in a number of current and experimental superalloys deformed at a range of conditions, focusing on tensile and creep tests, and to put these observations into the context of the demands made upon them in service. The balance between precipitate cutting, bypassing, shear by partial dislocations and micro-twinning is a function both of the composition of the alloy but also the size and distributions of the precipitate phases. How these different mechanisms add to produce the overall properties will contribute to our capability to model behaviour.
Earlier work before the PhD concentrated on the effects of processing and heat treatment variations on the microstructure of a newly developed polycrystalline disc alloy.
